Basic skin care - Step By Step Beginners Guide

Hello, welcome to my blog!

As a makeup artist I always have to answer some questions about skin care and how to achieve a natural makeup look. I always say that a well-groomed skin requires less products when applying makeup, and applying less foundation and less concealer consequently more natural the makeup will be. But for that the skin must be very clean, toned and hydrated.

I believe that the health of the skin is integrated to our well being in general. So, I'm starting a journey of self care (with collaborators from different areas) that will consequently help us to improve the health of our skin.

In this first article, the beauty therapist Bianca Ribeiro will simplify our skin-care routine.

Great skin is not simply a matter of DNA — your daily habits, in fact, have a big impact on what you see in the mirror. Ultimately, caring for your skin is simply personal. Here’s what you should keep in mind to sort through all the noise.

Three Main Steps

Cleansing

Think of your skin-care routine as consisting of three main steps:

1. Cleansing — Washing your face;

2. Toning — Balancing the skin;

3. Moisturising — Hydrating and softening the skin.

Toning
Moisturizing

Bianca Ribeiro adds some special cares beyond the three main steps, and some other cares that must be done weekly and monthly.

Your Daytime Regimen

Step 1. Cleansing: wash your face every morning and night. No more than twice a day, especially if you have oily skin, when we getting rid of the natural sebum, or oil, in your skin can actually cause even more oil to be produced.

Step 2. Toner: it helps to remove excess dirt and makeup, correct and balance the pH of your skin. Is there options of toner can helps control acne, increases hydration and if you have sensitive skin it has versions to calm your skin.

Step 3. Moisturiser: Repairs the natural barrier function of the skin and helps maintain balance. All type of skin needs to receive moisturiser every day, it is essential, always using products suitable for your skin type.

Step 4. Sunscreen: I recommend to use every day, and reapply every 3 hours. The sunscreen protects you from the UVA and UVB rays emitted by the sun and also visible light (lights, TV, computers). There are two types of sunscreens, physical and chemicals. Although the chemicals sunscreens offer more options in shops, the physical is a more natural option to have healthier skin. And to protect visible light opt for color sunscreen.

Your Nighttime Regimen

Step 1. Micellar water: is able to remove makeup very well.

Step 2. Cleansing

Step 3. Toner

Step 4. Moisturiser

Step 5. Eye cream: Is a specific moisturiser to the eye, prevents fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles.

Your weekly regimen

Once a week you can apply exfoliate to removes dead cells, keeping skin more beautiful, shiny and healthy. Don't do it more than twice a week. Facial masks, it does a deep hydration on the skin.

Your monthly regimen

To keep your skin better you can do some treatments at clinics such as deep cleansing facial, microdermabrasion or hydrofacial and enzymatic peel. This is a basic daily routine, you don't need a lot of products to improve your skin every day, and also if you can choose more natural cosmetics, it will keep your skin healthier. After you have created these basic habits, you can add vitamin C after your moisturiser in your routine, it has antioxidant action to prevent aging and if you have oily skin, you can add sebum controller before your moisturiser which reduces sebum production over time.

Don’t forget

There’s no universal fix. This is what worked for me, and it’s a great place to start, but it also took a lot of trial and error. Don’t give up if you start breaking out or don’t see results right away. Everyone’s skin is different and your first step for starting a routine should be figuring out what your skin type is.

Give it Time

The science behind skin-care products has come a long way but there’s still no such thing as an instant fix — you need time to reap the benefits, says Dr. Rachel Nazarian, a Manhattan dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group. “Results are only seen through consistent use,” she explains. Generally, aim to use a product over at least six weeks, once or twice daily, to notice a difference.
